10th May 2024, Addie's Afrique Foundation embarked on a project titled "Journey to the West", aimed at supporting less privileged schools in the Western Region of Ghana. The foundation visited Mmredane Basic School and Apronpronso Basic School, where the team distributed essential learning materials to improve teaching and learning experiences.

The donations included:

  • 400 books to support literacy and enhance student engagement in reading.
  • 4 whiteboards to improve classroom instruction and provide a more interactive teaching environment.
  • Two gallons of bleach and two gallons of liquid soap to each school to aid in maintaining hygiene in the schools.

In addition to providing these materials, the foundation proposed the Addie’s Literacy Project, which seeks to establish reading, writing, storytelling, and public speaking clubs. These clubs aim to improve the communication and literacy skills of students in both schools.

TARGETED SDG GOALS

The Journey to the West project supports the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

1. SDG 4: Quality Education - By distributing books and whiteboards, the project directly contributes to improving the quality of education in the schools by providing essential learning tools that enhance classroom experiences and encourage literacy.

2. SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation - The provision of detergents helps in maintaining proper hygiene in the schools, contributing to the goal of clean water and sanitation by promoting a healthy learning environment.

3. SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities - Supporting less privileged schools addresses educational inequality by ensuring that students from disadvantaged backgrounds have access to learning materials and opportunities that can improve their academic and social skills.

OBJECTIVES FOR THE PROJECT

The primary goals of the Journey to the West project were:

  • To improve access to educational resources by providing learning materials to underprivileged schools.
  • To enhance literacy by donating books and proposing literacy clubs aimed at developing reading, writing, storytelling, and public speaking skills.
  • To contribute to the sanitary well-being of the schools by providing detergents for cleaning and promoting a clean learning environment.

IMPACT OF THE PROJECT

The Journey to the West project had a positive and far-reaching impact on the two beneficiary schools:

  • Enhanced Learning Environment: The donation of 400 books will allow students to develop better reading habits, expand their knowledge, and improve their academic performance. The whiteboards will make teaching more dynamic and interactive.
  • Literacy Development: The introduction of the Addie’s Literacy Project is expected to have a lasting impact on students' reading, writing, and communication skills. This will empower them with the ability to express themselves better, contribute to discussions, and engage in public speaking, which will be crucial for their future success.
  • Improved Hygiene: The provision of detergents ensures that the schools can maintain a clean and safe environment, which is essential for students' health and well-being.

Conclusion

The Journey to the West project was a successful initiative by Addie's Afrique Foundation, demonstrating the foundation’s commitment to promoting education and social well-being. The materials provided and the proposed literacy project have laid the groundwork for sustained improvement in the academic performance and personal development of students in Mmredane Basic School and Apronpronso Basic School. Through this project, the foundation has not only addressed immediate needs but also planted seeds for long-term educational growth and empowerment.
